How to Get Volume at the Roots: 7 Heat-Free Methods That Actually Work

Flat roots are the number one complaint we hear — and the good news is that root volume is mostly technique, not genetics. Here are seven heat-free methods that actually lift hair at the root, ranked from fastest to most lasting.

1. Root-lifting clips (fastest, most targeted)

Small clips placed right at the root hold hair lifted away from the scalp while it cools and sets. Work in 1–2 inch sections at the crown, clip at the base so the hair stands up from the scalp, and leave them in for 10–20 minutes while you do your makeup. The lift sets as the hair cools.

This is the method behind our Root Lifting Clip Set — it works on dry hair, damp hair, and even overnight.

2. Flip your part

Hair “remembers” where it usually lies. Moving your part even half an inch to the opposite side forces the roots to stand up instead of lying flat. It takes ten seconds and works instantly.

3. Blow-dry upside down

Dry your roots first, head flipped over, using your fingers to lift at the scalp. Gravity does the work: roots dry in a lifted position instead of plastered down. Finish with a blast of cool air to set the shape — heat shapes, cold sets.

4. Velcro rollers at the crown

On nearly-dry hair, wrap the top sections around large velcro rollers, rolling away from your face. Leave for 15 minutes while they cool. The bigger the roller, the more lift and less curl.

5. Dry shampoo at the roots (on clean hair too)

Most people only use dry shampoo on dirty hair, but a light mist at the roots on clean hair adds grip and texture that holds lift. Apply, wait two minutes, then massage in with your fingertips. Our refresh dry shampoo is made for exactly this.

6. Volumizing powder

A pinch of volumizing powder worked into the roots with your fingertips creates instant texture and separation — the matte finish stops strands from clumping together and falling flat. A little goes a long way; start with less than you think. See our root-boost powder.

7. Sleep with lift

A loose topknot or a few clips at the crown overnight means you wake up with roots that are already lifted instead of pressed flat against the pillow. A soft claw clip holds a pineapple pony without denting the hair.

What kills root volume (avoid these)

  • Heavy conditioner at the roots. Conditioner belongs on the mid-lengths and ends only.
  • Not rinsing thoroughly. Residue weighs roots down — rinse longer than you think you need to.
  • Brushing flat against the scalp. It trains hair to lie down. Lift as you brush instead.

The 5-minute routine

Flip your part, mist dry shampoo at the roots, clip the crown sections up while you get ready, release and shake out. That’s it — no heat, no teasing, no damage.
